Tracking Software and Poker Bots

I'm sure you've heard of PokerTracker (PT3) and possibly even Hold'em Manager (HEM), but perhaps you don't really see the point in spending money on extra software.

Well there are many reasons for purchasing these programs. They differ depending on what kind of poker you are playing.

Since this site is catered to Poker Bots, I will explain why this software is so useful to somebody who operates one.

First and foremost, it is the best possible way to keep track of all your winnings and know what rate you are winning at (BB/100 for cash games or ROI for tourney's and Sit n Go's)*.  If you want to know how much money you won or lost between January 1, 2010 and January 20, 2010, this software will tell you.  If you want to track winnings with different profiles, you can set up different databases.  This is great if you have a few different player profiles for you Poker Bot, but don't know which one is winning the most money for you.

Another great way to use tracking software is by tracking statistics in order to easily plug holes in your game.  When running a Poker Bot, you may see that you are winning at 2.5BB/100 over a pretty good sample size.  Perhaps you're content with this, but wouldn't it be better if your Poker Bot could win at 3.5BB/100 or 5BB/100?  Of course. Tracking software allows you to load up all of your hand histories, and break them down hundreds of different ways. What hands are you losing money with?  Do you 3-bet too often?  Are you losing money on the button (the most profitable position)? This software allows you to easily analyze all of these things and many more with a few clicks of the mouse.

Using this approach and tweaking just my Poker Bots preflop play, I was able to take a profile winning at 3-4 BB/100 on pot limit games, to winning around 10 BB/100 on those same games.

Another added benefit that can't be easily quantified, is a much stronger understanding of poker. I played winning poker for almost 4 years before I got into Poker Bots. I thought I knew everything there was to know because I could win consistently on the $5 SNG's. I was as ignorant as one could be. I literally knew nothing about playing poker, other than a decent strategy that happened to win money. Tracking software can be the window to theories, strategies and plays that you would otherwise never know existed.

*BB/100 is the number of big bets (usually twice the big blind) that you win every 100 hands, ROI is simply the return on investment. If you pay $1 to enter a tournament and win $2, then you have 100% ROI.
