Many of you are probably
like me, if there's a way for me to get something for free, there's
no way I'm gonna pay for it! So naturally, the reaction to Poker
Botting is what can I get for free? Well the answer is,
unfortunately, not a whole lot. When it comes to Poker Bots, those
that know what they are doing don't generally share their secrets
with new-comers. For most, it takes a long time just to be vaguely
familiar with the terms and concepts that go along with Poker Bots
and their communities.
When I first came across
Poker Bots, it was because I stumbled across OpenHoldem (OH).
OpenHoldem is an open source version of WinHoldem. Both are
essentially the same program, however OH is free, has better code
behind it and is also backwards compatible with WinHoldem profiles.
After almost 8 months of toying around with OH, I finally gave up on
it and quit poker botting for a while. I was a college kid playing
poker and working on programming whenever I wasn't pretending to go
to class (easily 6-8 hours/day), but I spent tons of time and didn't
have a solid winning program.
What was the most
important thing I took away from this experience? Let somebody else
do the work for you! I am very computer savvy and can program with
the best of them, but quite frankly it was not worth my time (even
though I had a lot of it) to sit around and scrape poker sites day
in and day out, just so I could TRY a profile out. One of the other
major downfalls is that there are plenty of free WH/OH profiles
floating around, however NONE of them win any money (from what I've
seen and heard). On top of this, it is hard to find somebody willing
to help you with coding a profile or with just getting the program
itself to work. Even with programming knowledge the maintenance is
simply too much. And if you are not an avid computer programmer,
simply forget about it.
When I stumbled across
the current Poker Bot I run, I was quite skeptical. It seemed kind
of far-fetched that a program could just play poker for you out of
the box without any work! Luckily they had a free trial. Sure 200
hands didn't really tell me much as far as the play went, but what
it did tell me was that I could spend a little over $100, click a
few buttons, and I'd have a program playing poker for me with
absolutely ZERO programming or extra work on my part. Since then,
I've continued using the Bonus Bot and playing with it quite
successfully. When I first started, the bot was pretty plain, but it
did awesome playing the beginning of tournaments and SNG's for me
(you know, the parts where people normally fall asleep out of
boredom!). Now there are many custom profiles available as well as
an EASY to learn poker programming language. Even somebody with no
programming background can pick it up and write their own profile.
But the best part is the
contributions of their support community. Not only do many members
contribute free profiles, but most members are eager to help (just
don't expect a free profile that beats NL100...lol). As a final
thought for this article, I will say that for a select few people
with heavy programming backgrounds and strong poker knowledge, OH
may be more your cup of tea. It will still most definitely take you
MUCH longer to set up and start running, but maybe the challenge of
coding and creating something from scratch is what you're looking
for. For the other 98% of people that have a day job and wouldn't be
considered expert poker players, Shanky's Bonus bot is definitely
the way to go. For under $200, you can have a state of the art poker
bot with a few great proven profiles to go with it. And when you get
to the point that you feel comfortable and are ready to move up in
stakes, this bot has everything you need to do so.
